Jesus is proclaiming that He is the One who exercises authority even over the rules and regulations that govern the Sabbath day. As such, Jesus was proclaiming to the world, especially to the legalistic Pharisees, that He was greater than the Law and above the laws of the Mosaic Covenant because, as God in the flesh, He is the Author of those laws.

Jesus is making a point here, that fasting during the wedding feast is pointless. This is a story about a lame man whose friends believed that Jesus could heal him. At last they found a way to get their friend before Jesus by opening the roof and letting him down by ropes attached to his bed. But Jesus didn’t heal the man’s lameness He forgave his sins. From this sermon we can learn that our greatest need is to have our sins forgiven beyond anything else and that Jesus can because He is God in the flesh.

We often create lines of who is worthy to be welcomed by Jesus and who is not. we think surely a murderer and a fraudster cannot be saved perhaps a philanthropist. What we see here is that the tax collectors 'Levi' who were disliked for financially enslaving/impoverishing their own people are welcomed by Jesus. this is not a great look for Jesus and the Pharisees are appalled by his mercy.

In this short and apparently simple story Jesus is approached by a leper whom he heals. Jesus sends the leper to receive the certification of the priest as to his being made clean and able to re enter his community. This former leper becomes a disciple by “spreading the word” about Jesus, announcing what Jesus had done for him.
